CALLING DIBS IS A CHICAGO TRADITION
Chicago Dibs, it’s a long-revered Chicago tradition. “Dibs” refers to the practice of holding a shovelled-out parking space after a snowfall by placing chairs, laundry baskets, or other items in the street to mark the claimed space. The unwritten rule of Dibs is that it expires after 48 hours.
In 2002, Mayor Richard M. Daley declared his support. “He believes that if you shovel out a parking place in a snowstorm, it’s only responsible of other neighbours to be considerate,” City Hall said. In his 2015 race, Mayor Rahm Emanuel followed Daley’s line, asserting that he believes in “sweat equity.”
